What Is Lorem Ipsum and Where Does It Come From?

Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin text derived from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work by Cicero written in 45 BC. The standard passage beginning "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..." is taken from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of that work.

The text was popularized in the 1960s when Letraset used it on dry-transfer sheets for graphic designers. When desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker included it as default placeholder text in the 1980s, it became the global standard for design mockups.

Because it resembles Latin but is intentionally scrambled and meaningless, Lorem Ipsum is ideal for design work: viewers cannot read it or be distracted by its content, so they focus on the visual layout instead.

When to Use Placeholder Text in Design

• Wireframing and mockups — shows text block size and density without requiring final copy. Stakeholders focus on layout rather than editing words.
• Component library development — UI components like cards, lists, and headings need realistic-length text to demonstrate how they behave.
• Template design — email templates, document templates, and landing page templates need representative text to show proportions.
• Testing typography — checking font size, line height, letter spacing, and column width requires a realistic volume of text.
• Database seeding — developers seed databases with Lorem Ipsum to test text rendering in applications before real content is available.

Lorem Ipsum Alternatives

For some projects, meaningless Latin text is not ideal. Consider these alternatives:
