What Is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin text used as placeholder content in design, typesetting, and publishing. It looks like readable text at a glance — with a similar distribution of letters and word lengths as real English — but it has no actual meaning, which prevents it from distracting reviewers from evaluating the design itself.

When you're designing a webpage, brochure, or app interface and you don't yet have the real copy, Lorem Ipsum fills the space so you can evaluate typography, layout, and visual hierarchy without being influenced by the content.

The History and Origin

Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. The text was scrambled in the 1500s by an unknown printer who used it to fill a specimen type book. It has been the standard placeholder text in publishing ever since.

The text begins: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua..." The opening "Lorem ipsum" is actually a contraction of "dolorem ipsum" — Latin for "pain itself."

How to Use the Generator

1
Choose the unit

Select whether you want Lorem Ipsum measured in words, sentences, or paragraphs. Paragraphs give the most realistic layout simulation; words let you hit an exact count.

2
Set the amount

Enter the quantity. A typical body copy paragraph is 50–100 words or 4–6 sentences. A full page of text is typically 4–6 paragraphs.

3
Click Generate

The generator produces the Lorem Ipsum text. Each generation is slightly varied to avoid identical repeated blocks.

4
Copy and paste

Copy the text directly into your design tool, prototyping software, HTML, or document.

Alternatives to Lorem Ipsum

Industry-specific Lorem Ipsum

Several variants generate industry-specific placeholder text that looks more relevant in context: Bacon Ipsum (food), Corporate Ipsum (business jargon), Hipster Ipsum (creative agencies), and Samuel L. Ipsum. These are fun but can distract from the design evaluation.

Real representative content

The best placeholder text is actual representative content — a real headline, a real product description, a real customer testimonial. It catches design problems that Lorem Ipsum hides, like a headline that wraps awkwardly at a real word boundary, or a description that's too long for the allotted space.

When Not to Use Lorem Ipsum

Best practice: Use Lorem Ipsum for early wireframes and layout exploration. Switch to real or representative content before any stakeholder review or user testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lorem Ipsum real Latin?
It's derived from real Latin, but heavily scrambled. The original Cicero text has been randomized to the point that it's not grammatically correct Latin. It reads as Latin-like but has no coherent meaning.
Why does Lorem Ipsum start with 'Lorem' if that's not a real Latin word?
It's a contraction — the original Latin text began 'dolorem ipsum' but the 'd' was cut off when the printer extracted the passage. 'Lorem' is simply the truncated word that happened to survive at the beginning of the excerpt.
Can I use Lorem Ipsum commercially?
Yes — Lorem Ipsum is in the public domain. There are no copyright restrictions on using or generating it.
How many words should a typical website paragraph have?
Web readability guidelines suggest 50–80 words per paragraph for body content. Shorter paragraphs (25–50 words) work well for mobile-first designs. Long paragraphs (100+ words) are appropriate only for long-form editorial content.
