Volume Converter

Convert between volume units instantly. Results update as you type.

What This Tool Does

Converts between volume units — liters, milliliters, gallons, fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, cubic meters, and more — in your browser instantly.

Who This Is For

  • Cooks and bakers converting between US and metric recipe measurements
  • Scientists and students working with volume in chemistry or physics calculations
  • Engineers converting between fluid volume units in mechanical or process design
  • Travelers shopping in countries where volume is measured differently

Example: Input: 2 US gallons → Output: 7.571 liters · 256 fl oz · 16 cups · 8 pints · 4 quarts — all conversions shown simultaneously

US vs UK Volume Measurements — Important Differences

Many cooks are surprised to learn that US and UK volume units are not the same — and this trips up many cooks. For capacity dimensions of containers, also use the Length Converter. US and UK volume units are not the same:

When converting a recipe from a US source, use US measures. When a British source says "1 pint," that's 568 ml, not 473 ml.

Frequently Asked Questions

What volume units are supported?
Metric: cubic meters, liters, milliliters, cubic centimeters. Imperial/US: gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, tablespoons, and teaspoons. For full recipe conversion, combine with the Weight Converter and Temperature Converter. Also: cubic feet and cubic inches.
Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
No — 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters. 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters. The US gallon is about 20% smaller than the imperial gallon. The same difference applies to US and imperial pints, quarts, and fluid ounces. Always specify which system when precision matters.
How many milliliters is a teaspoon?
1 US teaspoon = 4.929 mL. In practice, 1 teaspoon is usually rounded to 5 mL in cooking and medicine dosing. The exact medical standard is 5 mL.
What is a fluid ounce?
A fluid ounce measures volume, not weight — despite the name. 1 US fluid ounce = 29.57 mL. 1 UK fluid ounce = 28.41 mL. It is used for liquid ingredients in recipes and on nutrition labels.
How do I convert a recipe from metric to US cups?
1 cup = 240 mL. 1 tablespoon = 15 mL. 1 teaspoon = 5 mL. Enter the milliliter amount and read off the cups/tablespoons/teaspoons equivalent.
When do I need cubic meters vs liters?
Liters are used for everyday liquid volumes (beverages, fuel). Cubic meters are used for large-scale volumes (room size for HVAC, concrete volume, swimming pools). 1 cubic meter = 1000 liters.
How many tablespoons in a cup?
There are 16 tablespoons in one US cup.

How It Works

1
Enter a value in any unitType a number into any volume field. All other units update simultaneously in real time.
2
Read the conversionsAll equivalent values in liters, milliliters, gallons, fluid ounces, cups, and pints are shown at once — no need to convert one pair at a time.
3
Copy the resultClick any field to select the value and copy it to use in your calculation or document.

When to Use This Tool

  • Converting volume measurements from a recipe, specification, or document that uses a different unit system
  • Quickly checking the volume equivalent when shopping, cooking, or following instructions in unfamiliar units
  • Converting volume values from metric to imperial (or vice versa) for a report or form
  • Double-checking a volume conversion calculation manually
